We have been inviting thousands of residents in Dundee to take part in an exciting new initiative known as Personal Travel Planning (PTP). Working with local people and visitors to Dundee, the PTP project aims to encourage individuals to travel more actively and environment friendly as part of their daily routine.
So far, nearly 3,500 people have taken part and 40% of them say they are getting more active as a result.
There are many benefits of walking, cycling, liftsharing or using public transport more, including better health, saving money and time, as well as meeting new people. At the same time, by choosing sustainable travel options, we will be helping to cut congestion and reduce pollution.
To date, the PTP projecthas been working in particular areas of Dundee - the City Centre, Hilltown, Stobswell and West Park.
Look out for our specially trained travel advisors visiting your community. They will be wearing bright red uniforms with the Dundee Travel Active logo and carrying an ID badge.
Our travel advisors will discuss travel habits with households and offer information such as cycling and walking maps, bus timetables and fares information, tips for how to lift share or practice more eco-friendly driving. They will also be able to help plan a particular journey or advise on active events that are happening in the area.
Our travel advisors are not selling anything. Everything offered is free of charge and designed to help. If people do not want to take part in the project, then they will be thanked for their time and not contacted again.
Our travel advisors will be providing information and advice on active travel to universities, schools, employees and job-seekers in Dundee, visitors to the city centre and people with particular health needs for which increased physical activity may benefit them.
Adults are recommended to have at least 30 minutes a day of moderate-intensity physical activity on five or more days a week. This means doing anything that makes you breathe faster and feel warmer. You don't have to do it all once, you can split your activity into smaller parts, such as three ten minute walks or two fifteen minute journeys on a bicycle. Children and young people need twice as much exercise as adults: at least one hour's physical activity on most days.
Exercise not only helps you maintain a healthy weight but, it can also lower your risk of developing serious health conditions such as cancer, heart disease and strokes. Extra physical activity also makes you feel more energetic and lifts your spirits. You will sleep better at night too. Exercise strengthens your bones and muscles and will keep you feeling and looking younger for longer.
Walking and cycling are fantastic ways of getting more active and can easily be included into everyday journeys such as going to work, to school or to the shops. Walking is free and can easily be combined with using the bus and cycling is a cheap and easy way to get around.
We do understand that you may not be sure about where to start. The PTP team are here to provide advice designed specifically for you. Remember, all information and advice is completely free; all we ask is for some of your time so that we can design our service to best suit your needs.
By taking part, you could also be in with a chance of winning some fantastic prizes and discounts on bus travel, the loan of a bike or leisure centre vouchers.
