About Dundee Travel Active

What is Dundee Travel Active?

Dundee Travel Active is a project that encourages residents of, or visitors to, Dundee to walk or cycle a little more to improve people's health and the environment.

At the moment, the project is concentrated in particular areas of Dundee: the city centre, Hilltown, Stobswell and West Park. If successful here, we hope to expand the work to the rest of the city.

We want everyone to get involved. We know that it is hard for some people to walk or cycle more but there are many benefits:
  • Save you money
  • Make you healthier
  • Help you meet new people in your community
  • Reduce your carbon footprint
  • Enjoy your city and its surroundings
  • Guaranteed arrival times
  • It's free - apart from a little bike maintenance

Dundee Travel Active is mostly funded by the Scottish Government's Smarter Choices, Smarter Places programme to 2011. Dundee City Council, Tactran and local bus companies are also contributing.

Council funding is from existing budgets, so there is no additional cost to your Council Tax.

In order to get the most from Travel Active, please sign up to the site. It's free and you'll get access to some exciting features, including My Travel Active an online resource for recording your walking and cycling trips, setting goals and challenging your friends!

What's going to be happening?

A number of related projects will be happening in Dundee as part of Travel Active. These include:
  • Personalised Travel Planning so that local people can easily join in and walk or cycle a little more
  • Improving streets and paths to make it easier and safer to walk or cycle
  • Providing better information on walking and cycling routes
  • Working with schools so that children and their parents can see that cycling can be useful, safe and fun
  • Supporting 'active prescriptions' if health professionals recommend that more physical activity could make someone healthier
All projects will look to engage local people and to support local businesses wherever possible.
