Walking …

It’s never a better time to walk a bit more, whether you’re a hardened car driver or already walk some of the time. The evidence for walking more is overwhelming…walkers have less incidences of cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other killer diseases. They live longer and get mental health benefits. Health experts agree that 30 minutes brisk walking on most days of the week is sufficient to improve fitness. That might seem a lot at first but walking can be incorporated into your everyday life more easily than any other activity.

“Only 20% of people in the UK get enough exercise to maintain a healthy lifestyle”

It may surprise you to know that walking one mile in 20 minutes uses as much energy as:

  • Running a mile in 10 minutes.
  • Swimming breastroke for 10 minutes.
  • Playing football for 12 minutes.
  • Cycling for 16 minutes.
  • Doing aerobics for 16 minutes.
  • Weight training for 17 minutes.

Why not walk to work, burn those calories and do a bit for the environment at the same time. Why not get yourself a pedometer and keep track of the number of steps that you take each day…remember the recommended number of steps per day for a healthy adult is 10,000 steps…walking to work will easily help contribute to that target.

If you register for the Calorie Calculator on this website you can access our online calorie counter and keep track of all those calories burned. Our Calorie Bank allows you to keep a running total of calories burned and help you to reach those targets.
